Emerson Renews Support

EMERSON PLEDGES $250,000 TO CARDINAL RITTER COLLEGE PREP FOR STUDENT TUITION SCHOLARSHIPS

Emerson donation includes community challenge gift

ST. LOUIS, March 30, 2007 – Cardinal Ritter College Prep announced today that Emerson has pledged an additional $250,000 to help fund student scholarships for economically disadvantaged families wanting to attend the school.

Emerson has made a $100,000 donation to the high school’s scholarship endowment and has pledged to match other companies’ and individuals’ donations for tuition scholarships up to another $150,000. These latest donations build on an Emerson gift made in 2006 totaling $200,000 for the scholarship and endowment programs.

The scholarship fund helps families offset the cost of tuition to attend Cardinal Ritter College Prep, which is located in the Midtown/Grand Center area of St. Louis. Long known for its commitment to academics, Cardinal Ritter College Prep regularly graduates all of its seniors. In 2006, as in years past, 100 percent of its graduating seniors were accepted to three or more colleges or universities.

“Cardinal Ritter College Prep provides a quality urban educational option within the city of St. Louis and is obviously doing a good job for its students,” said David N. Farr, chairman, CEO and president of Emerson. “We at Emerson are proud to help the high school strengthen its scholarship program to make access affordable for financially needy families. We hope our gift encourages other companies and individuals to learn more about the school and join us in support.”

Last year, 45 percent of the student population received some level of financial aid. More than half of the families who apply for financial aid have annual family incomes of $30,000 or less; 27 percent of the families applying for financial aid are below the poverty line.

Cardinal Ritter College Prep, with an enrollment of nearly 400 students, attracts students from St. Louis city and county and from Metro East communities in Illinois. Although Cardinal Ritter College Prep is a Catholic school, almost 80 percent of the students are not Catholic.

”We are delighted with Emerson’s continued dedication to Cardinal Ritter Prep,” said school president Leon Henderson. “Emerson is a philanthropic leader in the St. Louis community and we are so honored to have their support.”
